As soon as we decided to have Abby’s bachelorette party on a boat, I knew I wanted to DIY some custom beach bags for each of the ladies (and our one gentleman :) ). Initially I was going to use the same approach I did with the DIY Custom Beach Hat and simply lay out yarn or sequin trim into the sayings I wanted, but I quickly realized that would not be durable enough for a bag filled with goodies. Instead, I tried out the same embroidery approach I used for a DIY Embroidered Sweaters post in the past and I LOVE how they turned out!
First off, you need a straw tote (I purchased ours on sale from Gap), lots of yarn (I used ~1.3 rolls for the ‘I Do’ bag, most of it going towards the pom poms), embroidery paper, an embroidery needle, pom-pom maker, and a hot glue gun. Using the medium sized pom-pom maker from Hobby Lobby, I first made 23 pom-poms (9 for the back, 6 for the sides, and another 8 for the front).
Next, I drew out the ‘I Do’ on the embroidery paper and taped it to the center of the straw tote. Abby loved this ‘I Do’ tote by Soeur Du Maroc so I was trying to replicate that font as closely as possible.
From there I simply started embroidering the text using a ‘basic embroidery’ technique I searched on Youtube. I embroidered over the ‘I Do’ twice to make it a bit thicker. Looking back I wish I had doubled up on the embroidery for the other totes (shown at the end of this post!) but my thumbs were literally going numb from doing all 4 bags so there was no way I was going to do it all again.
From there I gently ripped off the embroidery paper and used the glue gun to attach all of the pom-poms. Since the glue seeps into the creases in the straw, the pom-poms actually stay very well. Abby flew from Seattle to Omaha and Omaha to Jamaica and they all stayed attached!
I absolutely love how they turned out and they only cost ~$40 total! Check out all of the other bags I put together below:
Which bag is your fav?! I switched things up for each tote and love how the colored ones turned out. Next week I’ll share all of the goodies that I included in the bags and the final few DIYs from the bach party so stay tuned!
